For the past 6 years, the winegrowers of Saint Marcel d'Ardèche have been ageing some of their wines at the bottom of the cave of Saint Marcel d'Ardèche. An unusual experience that has created a stir within the group and given rise to a humorous communication.
"The legend tells that about 12,000 years ago, a tribe called Vino Habilis populated the southern Ardèche. Its members raised female aurochs, greedy for grapes, who transformed them not into milk, but into wine. The Vino Hbailis found refuge in caves to enjoy their famous beverage.
In the tribe, everyone had his role: artist, potter, innkeeper, dowser, gardener, wise woman, magician, nature sisters and even a small group protecting them from the neighboring tribe of Malabilis."
The Vino Habilis are supposed to be the ancestors of today's winemakers. The idea for this legend sprang from the imagination of one of them, Raphaël Pommier:
"We were inspired by a prehistoric presence on our land. A female Auroch is drawn on a wall of the cave of Saint Marcel. She has a halo on her mouth. When I saw her, I immediately said to myself that she was eating raiisin", he explains with a smile.
"We created an imaginary world. For that we were inspired by a prehistoric presence on our land. We claim this magical and humorous filiation".
From this cave painting was born the myth of Vino Habilis and its avatars.
"All our avatars have a link with our culture, our way of life or a place that is dear to us, explains Frederic Dorthe, president of the association. My avatar is the artist. He paints hands everywhere on the walls. For my part, I create labels for my bottles with hands. There is an almost genetic correspondence with my avatar."
