Discover the Ardèche vineyards, a wine-growing area where many different grape varieties are cultivated. Three names are used to designate Ardèche wines: AOC Côte du Rhône, AOC Côtes du Vivarais and IGP Ardèche. The varied soils and climate have allowed the cultivation of different grape varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Gamay, Pinot, Cinsault and Carignan for the reds and Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites. The red, white and rosé wines of the Ardèche, such as the Cardinal from Domaine du Chapitre or the Per el from Domaine Saladin, are particularly appreciated for their quality. Taste them during a wine tourism visit to the Domaines or in a good restaurant like L'Oustaou in Ardèche.
The denominations and the diversity of the wines of Ardèche
The Ardeche is a wine-producing region that abounds in vineyards producing quality wines, rich in flavors and aromas. The region covers about 7000 hectares, with wines produced under three denominations: AOC Côte du Rhône, AOC Côtes du Vivarais and IGP Ardèche. Ardèche wines are renowned for their diversity, thanks to the wide variety of terroirs present in the region.
The vines are particularly fond of the rough terrain of the hillsides, and adapt perfectly to this climate with its sometimes significant temperature variations. This mosaic of landscapes reveals a great diversity of soils, thus offering a great diversity of tastes, aromas and colors. Ardèche wines are mainly produced under the terms of Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages and Côtes-du-Vivarais. They are found under their own appellation (AOC). There used to be two protected geographical indications, called Vins de Pays d'Ardèche and Coteaux de l'Ardèche, but they have been grouped together under the PGI Ardèche.
The diversity of grape varieties grown in the Ardèche
Many grape varieties are grown in the Ardèche, offering a diversity of tastes, aromas and colors. During the tasting, the aromatic aspect of the grape stands out as well as the vinification process used, and one can easily compare the fruity wine with the dry wine for example. For the red wine, we note the grenache, the syrah, the merlot, the cabernet-sauvignon, the gamay, the pinot. Cinsault and carignan are also cultivated. There is also an Ardèche grape variety, the Chatus, which comes from the Cévennes of the Ardèche. It produces a wine with high tannins, ideal with fatty dishes. White wine is mostly made from Chardonnay and Viognier, offering dry and aromatic wines. Sauvignon Blanc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne are also sometimes found. With a base of red or white fruits, great wines are produced from the Ardèche vineyards!
Red and white wines of the Ardèche, examples of domains and vintages
There are some excellent red wines in the Ardeche, including Cardinal from Domaine du Chapitre, Fan de Lune from Domaine Saladin, Côte du Rhône Village from Clos Delorme, La Corsée from Domaine Pierre-Laine and L'Euze from Domaine Champs Vermeil. White wines in the Ardeche are often fresh and balanced, with examples including the Per el from Domaine Saladin, La Dame du Chapitre and the Exultâtes from Domaine du Chapitre, Le Vin de France Delorme (ideal for an aperitif or with foie gras) and the Bekke de Contadour from Domaine de Grangeon.
Rosé wines.
Thanks to the diversity of the cultivated grape varieties, the Ardèche also has plenty of fresh rosé wines to enjoy in the summer, in the shade of an oak tree, facing the Rhone valley. The AOP, Côte du Rhône of the Domaine du Chapitre, the Tralala of the Domaine Saladin, the coteau de L'Ardèche rose of the Domaine Champs Vermeil and the Côtes-du-Rhône Rose of the Domaines Pierre Laine and Delorme are among the rosés of Ardèche to discover.
The richness of the Ardèche gastronomy
In addition to wine production, the Ardèche is also a territory known for its rich gastronomy. Local products are numerous and varied: goat cheese, charcuterie, truffles, honey, chestnuts, olives, olive oil, and many others. Many local restaurant owners use these quality products in their dishes, thus offering an authentic and tasty cuisine.

Finally, the natural beauty of the Ardeche attracts many visitors each year. The Ardeche Gorge is a popular tourist destination, offering many outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, climbing and caving. The region also boasts many picturesque villages, magnificent castles and fascinating historical remains that bear witness to an eventful past.
