Strategic Preparation: What to pack for 48 hours?

Packing for the Ardèche requires a certain method, as the climate of southern Vivarais is subject to contrasting influences, ranging from the harshness of the Cévennes plateau to the west to the warmth of the Rhône valley to the east.

For the summer months (April to September):

Although the daytime heat can be oppressive (regularly above 32°C in July/August), the fatal mistake for a short stay is to overlook the wind factor. The Mistral, a north wind, can pick up suddenly, sweep away the clouds and cause the temperature to drop significantly in the evening.

• Essentials: A light windbreaker and a fleece jumper. A fleece is strictly essential if you go down to visit the local caves (Chauvet, Aven d’Orgnac, Saint-Marcel), where the temperature remains at 12–14°C all year round, causing a significant thermal shock.
• Essential gear: Water shoes (water slippers). The beaches of the Ardèche are made up of abrasive limestone pebbles, making it very painful to enter the water barefoot. Also remember to use certified biodegradable sun cream so as not to pollute the river’s fragile ecosystem whilst swimming.

For the low season (October to March):

The daily temperature range is huge. It can be 2°C at dawn and 18°C in the midday sun.

• The approach: The ‘layered’ system (breathable T-shirt, insulating fleece, water-repellent hardshell jacket) is the only viable option.
• Durability: Proper trail or hiking boots with lugged soles (Vibram-style). The limestone rock of the Ardèche garrigue becomes as slippery as soap after an autumn rain.

Accessibility: How to get to Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche?

Road access is key to a successful weekend. Les Truffières campsite has built its success on this factor: you leave the motorway, and you’re almost there.

• The North-South Route (From Lyon, Valence, Paris): Take the A7 motorway (“Autoroute du Soleil”). If traffic is heavy around Montélimar, ignore exit 18 (Montélimar Sud). Carry on to exit 19 (Bollène). From this toll booth, the campsite is just 21 short kilometres away along a wide, fast-flowing country road that crosses the River Rhône. Estimated journey time from the exit: 25 minutes.
• The South-North Route (From Marseille, Montpellier, Nîmes): Take the A9 or A7 northwards. Also take the Bollène exit (Exit 19). The journey from Nîmes takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, and 2 hours from Montpellier. This is the perfect distance to set off on a Friday at 6 pm and arrive just in time for dinner, without getting too tired.
• The ‘Soft Mobility’ Option (Train & TGV):
  If you opt for the train, head for Montélimar station (32 km away) or Pierrelatte station (TER). Buses on the regional network (Le Sept) provide connections to Bourg-Saint-Andéol and Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche. However, for maximum flexibility over a 48-hour period, we strongly recommend hiring a car from your arrival station.

Can we organise a last-minute weekend at Les Truffières in the middle of winter?

Yes, absolutely.

Unlike the vast majority of campsites in the Ardèche, which close at the end of September, our site is open from 1 January to 31 December. We guarantee your comfort in cold weather thanks to a fully heated sanitary block (hot water included) and our 5 mobile homes equipped with heat pumps (reversible air conditioning), perfect even when the nights are freezing in the garrigue.

Do I need to book local activities weeks in advance?

No.
Major tourist attractions such as the Chauvet 2 Cave or the Aven d’Orgnac operate under strict capacity limits; online booking is mandatory but does not need to be made in advance for long weekends. Conversely, canoe trips down the Ardèche can be decided and booked in five minutes the day before directly at our campsite reception (during the season)

Can very large motorhomes (double-axle) access the site easily?

Yes, without any difficulty.
The flat terrain of our 5-hectare site and the wide access roads eliminate any stressful manoeuvring. Each of our 100 pitch-only pitches offers over 100 m² of space. Furthermore, our service area is designed to accommodate even the largest overhangs without any risk of snagging.

Are dogs allowed on short stays?

Yes, your pets are welcome.
Your four-legged friend can accompany you to your pitch (with the strict exception of Category 1 and 2 dogs as defined by law). As the forest walks start right at the campsite gate, your dog’s morning walk takes place in the heart of nature, in complete safety, far from busy roads (leashes MUST be worn).

If we arrive on Friday at 9.30 pm, will there be anything available for dinner?

Yes, there are several options available on site and nearby.
In a real pinch, the reception shop (pasta, sauces, microwave meals) and “The Pub” bar are open for business. During the peak summer season, the kitchen at L’Oustaou restaurant provides catering. If you’d prefer to go out, the centre of Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche (just a 3-minute drive away) has bakeries, fast-food outlets and an Intermarché supermarket.

Is it worth bringing your bikes for just two days?

Yes, it’s the ideal mode of transport.
The Saint-Marcel area is a paradise for flat-country cycle touring. Unloading your bikes gives you immediate access to safe cycle paths, the famous ViaRhôna, and the surrounding wine-growing lanes. It’s a sure-fire way to avoid any potential traffic jams at the end of summer days near water sources.
