"The soul of the Ardeche has an address"
The Ardèche is home to one of its greatest jewels: the Cirque de Gens. This site was formed over the ages by the erosion of a limestone plateau from the sea bed, giving rise to imposing cliffs. The Cirque de Gens is characterized by its circular or semi-circular shape surrounded by cliffs reaching 100 meters high. It extends over 340 hectares upstream from Vallon-Pont d'Arc.
The Cirque de Gens is also a unique mineralogical jewel. The limestone extracted from the gorge has been used since ancient times to build structures such as the Saint-Charles train station in Marseille, the port of Sète and the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York. This type of limestone is now found all over the world.
During your visit, you can enjoy an exceptional panorama. There are several hiking trails from Ruoms and Balazuc, allowing you to explore the area. You can also rent a canoe or stand-up paddle to explore the Cirque de Gens from the water.
The Cirque de Gens is also a popular climbing site. With its steep cliffs offering spectacular views, it is ideal for rock climbing. There are several routes ranging from 6a to 7c and the minimum recommended level is 5c. For a supervised climbing experience, go to the tourist office in Ruoms, where you can buy the book "Escalade en Ardèche".
The cirque of Gens is part of the Regional Natural Park of the Monts d'Ardèche. This park is a protected area of the Ardèche region, created in 1985. It covers more than 50 000 hectares and offers an exceptional natural wealth, with its forests, gorges, mountains, rivers and lakes. The Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park is a site for hiking, discovering the fauna and flora, climbing, fishing, swimming, etc. It is home to a remarkable biological diversity, with unique animal and plant species. The Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park is a real natural jewel, a real treasure to discover and preserve.
