The Ardèche, except for a detailed rectification in 1790, is the republican version of the old Vivarais. Situated and divided between the Auvergne and Provence, the Languedoc, of which it is a part, and the Dauphiné, which faces it along the Rhône, it is a country where the landscapes are juxtaposed like the pieces of a gigantic puzzle. Seven regions make it up, which, from Serrieres to Bourg-saint-Andeol, over 135 kilometres, follow one another from north to south. Firstly, the Rhodanian Shore, a narrow ribbon of alluvial land running along the course of the river, a link in the image of the Rhône, which has never been a border. To the north, the crystalline and turbulent Haut-Vivarais region, bordering Forez. To the south, the Bas-Vivarais, limestone, cut by the Coiron planèze and bounded by the splendid river which gave its name to the department. Between the two, the Boutieres encompassing the Erieux basin linking the Rivage to the Montagne and its high plateaux, a country of breeding beaten by the winds. Finally, the Cévenne, extending the Boutieres, kingdom of the chestnut tree, separating the fir trees of the mountain from the Mediterranean scrubland from west to east, all of which drops more than 1,500 metres in less than 70 kilometres under the parallel of Privas - at its widest point - modifying the climate while at the same time delimiting the large cultivation areas. The tormented relief, the poverty of the soil, the harshness of the rural life have forged a type of man used to constantly measure himself against the bad weather. And from diversity was born unity. All of them, "pagels" of the highlands or "rayols" of the slopes, Cévenols or Boutiérots, Haut or Bas-Vivarois, claim to be from their native land.
A land of mystics, mystery and partisans, of men hard at work but with sensitive souls, tenacious, but of good faith, docile to the realities of the land but seeking ideals and beliefs, such is the Ardèche. Such are the Ardéchois
