Until the revolution, Saint-Martin de la Pierre (formerly Petra and now Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche) was at the heart of the ancient community of Aiguèze. Each year in August, a consul was elected to represent this locality at the council of Aiguèze. The spiritual Saint-Martin, which was part of the diocese of Uzès, was a parish in its own right and even had Laval Saint Roman as an annex. It was the Gard-Ardèche departmental boundary that separated, by the natural passage of the river, Saint-Martin from the village of Aiguèze, thus creating two distinct communes. But this separation was not made without difficulty, because it gave Aiguèze the advantage of having most of the former territory of the community. Fifty years passed before the problem was resolved.

A little history...

Max Ernst, a major artist of the Dadaist and Surrealist movements, German painter and sculptor, stayed in Saint-Martin d'Ardèche between 1938 and 1941 with his English companion Leonora Carrington. Many of his works, which are now exhibited in major museums, were created there. As Leonora would later say, their life in Saint-Martin d'Ardèche was like "an idea of heaven".
