The National Nature Reserve Gorges de l'Ardeche is a national nature reserve located in the Occitania and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions. Classified in 1980 with an area of 1,572 hectares, it was extended in 2018 on 1,950 hectares and protects the gorges of the Ardèche.
It measures 60 to 70 cm, has a wingspan of 150 to 170 cm and weighs between 1500 and 2000 grams. At the level of its plumage, a characteristic white spot which grows with the age adorns its back and it presents a strong contrast between its dark wings and the rest of the body, white. Young people, on the other hand, have a russet color and do not assume their adult plumage until around 3 to 4 years of age.
The adult is characterized by black and white plumage and an elongated, ruffled head. The face is bare, yellow to orange with a blackish beak. No sexual dimorphism makes it easy to differentiate males from females, with the exception of a dark band on the bare skin of the males' heads in summer, and lanceolate feathers almost always erect on the head during the breeding season .
Young people are distinguished from adults by their darker plumage. The final adult plumage is acquired around the 5th / 6th grade. Because of the individual variants in intermediate liveries, it is difficult to relate a specific age with a livery.
