Romanesque art in La Garde-Adhémar

The church of Saint Michel, built in the 12th century, is a beautiful jewel of Provençal Romanesque art. Listed as a historical monument, it was renovated in the middle of the 19th century. It houses a wooden Virgin and Child dating from the 12th century. A small altar found on the site of the Val des Nymphes adorns the entrance to the building. It attests to the presence of a pagan cult dedicated to the mother goddesses nymphs.

Situated 2km from the village, the Val site witnessed the development of an ancient cult of the Nymphs Mothers, of which the small altar found on the site and visible in the church of Saint Michel is the legacy. A medieval residence as well as four churches, dependent on the abbey of Tournus in Burgundy, have also been unearthed through archaeological and historical research. An island of freshness thanks to its springs, the only building still standing is the prioral chapel, a masterpiece of Romanesque art.
