Anne de Joyeuse, the eldest of the 7 grandsons of Jean de Joyeuse, claimed to be descended through the maternal line from the august emperor.

The legend of the creation of the town has its oldest root in the fact that Charlemagne's sword, named Joyeuse in the Chanson de Roland, gave its name to the town.

Charlemagne, at war with the Saracens, is said to have lost his weapon during a battle on the site known as the "King's Field" on the banks of the river La Beaume. A soldier having found the sword, the emperor is said to have offered him the surrounding land as a reward for building a castle and reigning as a lord with the title "de Joyeuse".

This flattering legend for the Joyeusains was repeated many times by many others.
