A palace between Renaissance and classical in Provence
Overlooking the plains and mountains, Grignan and its castle, built on a rocky promontory overlooking the village, are characteristic of the Drôme Provençale and one of the region's must-see stops. Start at the bottom of the village and you will discover the statue of Madame de Sévigné, whose correspondence to her daughter, the Countess of Grignan, made her famous. Walk through the narrow streets lined with small shops to the castle, a testament to French Renaissance and classicist architecture, which has had an eventful history. The first references to the Château Fort can be found as early as the 11th century. It underwent its greatest transformations during the Renaissance when it became the prestigious pleasure residence of the Adhemar family. In the 17th century, the Marquise de Sévigné lived there with her daughter Françoise-Marguerite. The castle disappeared during the Revolution and was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century. Since 1979, it has belonged to the Department of the Drôme, which has undertaken an ambitious programme of restoration and acquisitions. In 1993, it was classified as a historic monument and awarded the Musée de France label. The Château offers visitors precious evidence of the daily life of its occupants during the different eras. Passing by the collegiate church, you arrive at the esplanade, in the gardens, you will find a superb Renaissance façade in front of which the Fêtes Nocturnes take place every season.
Located south-east of Montélimar, the village of Grignan defines the border between the north, made up of oak and pine woods and broom-covered moors, and the south where garrigues and vines dominate. The charming little town that has retained its medieval charm merges with a 33-metre rocky promontory crowned by the castle. It is reached via steep streets, after having been charmed by the 14th century belfry and the 15th century houses. Once at the top, you will discover both the majesty of the Renaissance architecture and an enchanting panorama with the Lance mountain, the Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail in the distance. The famous terraces of the castle offer a remarkable panorama of northern Provence.
In a letter dated 13 July 1689, Madame de Sévigné wrote to her daughter:
"It is even pleasant not to be tempted to leave your beautiful terraces. (...) All your views are admirable; I know the one of Mont Ventoux. I am very fond of all these amphitheatres, and I am convinced, as you are, that if heaven ever has any curiosities for our spectacles, its inhabitants will choose no other place than this one to see them conveniently, and at the same time, you will have one of the most magnificent in the world, without question...".
