Episcopal city since the ruin of Alba in the 5th century, when the bishops settled definitively on the steep, easily defensible rock overlooking the Rhône. At the same time, the city became the capital of the Vivarais and the bishop, the true master of half the country, fought for his independence until his annexation to the crown in the 14th century. He retained his title of Count of Viviers and Prince of Donzere and Châteauneuf. Viviers is a town full of attractions, which is hardly revealed by crossing the main road. It is necessary to penetrate there and to stroll. The old houses abound and if the most famous is this house of the knights of the Renaissance period, with the chances of the steep lanes of the high city and the streets of the lower city, one will discover there many houses of XVe, XVIe, XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries, of which the most beautiful jewel is undoubtedly the hotel of Tourville.
Outside the old town, the bishop's palace, the church of Notre-Dame du Rhône and the Hôtel de Roqueplane - now the town hall - are all 18th century works by the Avignon architect, J-B. Franque. Vast gardens adorn these buildings. Of the Saint-Vincent cathedral, built by Bishop Léger, next to the old tower, only the side walls of the nave remain. The choir was destroyed in the 16th century and rebuilt in the style of the day under Bishop Claude de Tournon. It is one of the masterpieces of the flamboyant Gothic style. As for the bell tower which dominates the old houses of Châteauvieux, it retains its ground floor from the Romanesque period, a first floor extended by an apse forming the chapel of Saint-Michel, and a second floor. The upper floor with its crenellations and watchtower was built at the end of the 14th century for defensive purposes. From the platform, one can enjoy a vast panorama from the Rhône valley to the roofs of the old town.
On 5 December 2017, the idol of youth joined the stars of rock and left his many fans orphaned. The decision to have him buried in Saint-Barthélemy added a little sadness to all those who would never be able to visit the West Indies. It was during the state funeral in Paris that a group of die-hard fans from the Drôme and Ardèche launched the idea of creating a place of remembrance in France. They launched a subscription among the public to create a 3m statue to the glory of the "Taulier" of French rock, a monument that would be erected in Viviers.
Why a statue of Johnny Hallyday in this small town in the southern Ardèche?
Quite simply because this is where Huguette Galmiche (née Clerc), Johnny Hallyday's mother, lived until her death in 2007. Johnny came to see her regularly and many people from the south of France had the chance to meet him. Some of them, not knowing that it was really Johnny, told her that he looked a lot like her. She is now buried in the town's old cemetery and so for some fans, it is a bit of Johnny's DNA that is now in Viviers.
The inauguration of the statue took place on 16 June, one day after Johnny Hallyday's birthday. A crowd of 2000 people came to pay tribute to the singer. More than 300 motorcyclists roared their Harley Davidsons between Viviers and Montélimar.
The statue has found its place in the park of the restaurant "Le Tennessee" on Rd 86, a few kilometres from the centre of Viviers. This establishment organises many rock concerts and since this summer it has become a place of pilgrimage for many fans of the singer and bikers. Johnny look-alikes also perform there regularly.
The only problem (along with the inheritance issues) was that the face of the statue quickly became the subject of debate, as it did not resemble Johnny for some fans. The sculptor did not have enough time before the inauguration to achieve a satisfactory result. He had to redo the face and 5 months after the official presentation of the statue, this time the face is resembling and the admirers and nostalgic of Johnny are delighted with this beautiful tribute.
So, see you soon on "Route 86"!
