Tourism in Saint Marcel d'Ardèche,

The village, nestled in the middle of its vineyards, seems to laze in a landscape reminiscent of some distant Tuscany.

Isolated in the plain at the mouth of the Ardèche gorges, it is difficult to spot the imposing and confused mass of the Château du Bosquet, where the future Cardinal de Bernis, minister under Louis XV, was born in 1715. All that remains of this sumptuous renaissance residence are some well degraded remains. The superb fireplace in the main hall was dismantled and, in 1930, moved to the Philadelphia Museum in the USA.

A short distance away, to the north, the chapel of Saint-Suplice de Trignan, in the middle of the vines, reigns over a garrigue of lavender and thyme. It is all that remains of the former commandery of the Hospitaliers de Saint-jean, a sub-chamber of the famous Templar order. The building, studded with Carolingian reused stones, is topped by a small campanile with a stone pyramid.

From there, through the "gras" populated with numerous dolmens and a beautiful menhir, you can reach the Caves of Saint-Marcel opening into the side of the Ardèche gorges.
