Tourism in Ruoms,

Ruoms, this large town, very lively during the summer holidays, has kept part of its square enclosure flanked by seven round towers, most of them inhabited. Its church, a former Cluniac priory, with its limestone apse chiselled with black rhombuses and red cement, still has Carolingian motifs. It was fortified at the same time as the walled city. The tower above the dome was erected as a keep with arches and decorated with inlaid patterns in volcanic stone. Numerous 14th and 15th century houses with mullioned windows, staircases and astonishing chimneys surround the church, as well as the chapel of Notre-Dame des pommiers, founded in the 8th century. 

But it is to the proximity of the Ardèche river, which favoured its breweries - now deserted - that Ruoms owes its fame. Its "défilé" is 1.5km away, in the direction of Largentiere. The hand of man has carved out of the limestone a cornice road with tunnels and large bays overlooking the river.

Roads of the Ruoms defile

From Ruoms you take the direction of Largentière to take this very picturesque road which was dug in the heart of the rock in the 19th century. It offers a spectacular view of the limestone cliffs. You drive almost at water level, the road bordered on the other side by impressive cliffs. You go through a succession of tunnels and arches and then you thread your way through deep gorges overlooking the Ardèche and then the Ligne. A beautiful view of the gorge from the main road towards Aubenas.
