Alba Augusta Helvorum, the ancient capital of the Gallic people of the Ardèche, was called Aps until 1903. A brilliant Roman city stretching across the plain on the left bank of the Escoutay, it was the seat of the bishopric, which was moved to Viviers in the third quarter of the 5th century. The Roman town, then abandoned or destroyed, gave way to a rural population. It is from now on in the shade of the seigniorial castle that the current village will develop, from the XVII-XVIIIth centuries.
The theatre is the only ancient monument whose elevation has been preserved, but on either side of the N. 102, the location of the baths and the forum were given and excavations have revealed numerous sarcophagi, coins, ceramics, inscriptions, mosaics, funerary furniture, etc.
The castle, the oldest parts of which do not go back much further than the 15th century, is a fairly homogeneous construction from the 17th century. The sobriety of its architecture, a dark mass of basalt dominating the village from its volcanic spur, will not fail to impress the visitor.
The village "intra" and then "extra muros" shows little evidence of the 16th century despite its "medieval" appearance and, a stone's throw away, the village of La Roche, nestled in its ramparts under its basaltic dyke, has kept its peaceful alleys
