Bollène is ideally positioned in the Rhône valley, at the crossroads of four departments: Vaucluse, Drôme, Ardèche and Gard.
It was therefore logical that it should be one of the main motorway exits for access to the south east of the Ardèche.
Representative of the gates of Provence, the city announces: the sun, the Mistral, the holidays. The landscapes are beginning to change and the locals have a singing accent...
From the heights of the town and the magnificent gardens surrounding the Collégiale St Martin, you will be in awe of the panoramic views over the Cévennes, the Rhône Valley and the old buildings of the town!
Bollène, view on the roofs
Bollène is an ancient city that has preserved its rich heritage, as evidenced by the vestiges of the civilizations that have succeeded one another.
The most impressive of these is the troglodytic village of Barry (one of the most important in France). Here you will discover the ingenuity of the inhabitants who have carved their houses into the very heart of the cliff.
The project :
Restore and protect the troglodytic village of Barry in Bollène
From the Neolithic period to the middle of the 20th century, several civilizations have marked the site of Barry, a village clinging to the side of a hill. The Ligurians, the Celts and then the Romans made Barry the commercial capital of the Tricastin, where Phoenician and Greek merchants passed through on their way up the Rhône and then the Via Agrippa. The troglodytic village was inhabited until the 20th century.
This site was home to an intense life. Quarrymen harvesting the stones of the massif from the Roman era lived here. Chapels were built there, unfortunately only the chapel of Notre Dame d'Espérance survived and was restored in 2014.
The place and its history:
In 2009, a municipal decree blocked access to the site due to the instability of the cliff. This seriously endangered the troglodytic village and the entire built heritage.
The town of Bollène commissioned several series of surveys of the cliff between 2009 and 2010, which highlighted its fragility and danger. The risks were listed according to their risk in five levels: very high, high, medium, low, very low.
The objectives were to safeguard, consolidate and secure the site. The works were of various kinds and concerned the cliff, the buildings and the green spaces. The site was divided into 4 sectors, for reasons of funding and classification of the work according to its risks
On the buildings, the work focused on removing vegetation from roofs and facades, filling cracks, reinforcing masonry, rehabilitating joints with lime, consolidating existing plasterwork, repairing roofs and creating a roof overlay with slate.
The pathways were made safer by creating low terraced walls, restoring and raising the restanques and installing guardrails with two rails. The calades were also restored.
The main objective was to safeguard this site and its memory, but also to make it safe for the public and finally, to provide occasional entertainment.
